>> it's not his fault. >> we have to go. >> thanks for watching. have a fantastic weekend, everyone. see you monday. >> job creation down, unemployment up, critics howl and the president circles the wagons. this is special report. >> good evening, i'm bret baier. today's may jobs report couldn't have been worse for president obama, but not by much. just 69,000 jobs create the, the fewest in a year. unemployment from 8.1% to 8.2 and wall street took the news hard with stocks down significantly. the stock lost 275 today. the s&p lost 32 and nasdaq well 80. we have seenor washington

correspondent beater barns looks at the markets and overseas reaction but we begin with ed henry, white house correspondent, on what the numbers mean for this president. >> what's your name? good to speak. >> president obama who toured a honeywell facility that makes home thermostats is feeling the political heat. >> we should be well into a very robust recovery by now. >> mitt romney simply called the jobs report devastating as it quick the stock market reeling. faced now with 40 straight months of unemployment over 8%, the president acknowledged the economy is still not where it should be. >> our businesses have created almost 4.3 million new jobs over the last 27 months, but as we learn in today's jobs report, we still aren't creating them as fast as we want. >> before raising campaign cash in minneapolis and chicago, the president blamed the jobs report on theter mile in europe. >> we've had a crisis in europe's economy that is having an impact worldwide. it's starting to cast a shadow

on our own as well. so we've got a lot of work to do before we get to where we need to be. >> romney noted the president vowed in 2009 he would have it turned around in one term and even predicted unemployment would be around 6% by now. republicans say time is running out. after a week of report showing increased unemployment claims, sliding consumer confidence and economic growth down. >> their polls have made it harder for the recovery to recover. i think that's one of the reasons why people are looking for a new direction. >> the numbers are worse if you down everyone out of work. whether they are look for a job, working part-time when they want a full-time job, or have simply given up the search. that number often called the real unemployment rate is now up to 14.8%. and shows skiddishness among employers. anything goes off script a little bit, and europe is going way off script, they pull back and quit hiring. >> the president is also running out of moves he can make between now and november.

while democrats are pushing for more infrastructure money, republicans are wait are for other money first. >> we are calling on republicans to start stalling on the transportation bill, create jobs now. >> 30 bills sitting in the united states senate. >> why don't they pick up the bills and pass them and help the american people rather than playing politics over there? >> at one of the fundraisers today the president charged that there's a republican fever to beat him. and declared that when he wins the election he will beat that fever and get republicans to support his agenda, adding it will be good for the economy. brett. >> and in the white house briefing room, thank you. as we told you, wall street took a nose dive on today's job news and the rest of the world's financial community is not much happier. senior washington correspondent peter barns is here with that part of the story. good evening. >> good evening. with today's sharp sell off in stocks, the dow industrials have now given up all of their gains for 20 is 12 and went negative r

the year. the s&p is just one point away from an official correction, defined as a ten percent decline from a recent high. nasdaq is in a correction, down 12%. the stalling jobs market has version worrying about the health of the economy. and europe's debt crisis remains the biggest threat. it could worsen europe's struggling economy and drag down its bank, especially if greece exits the euro zone. >> a credit crunch of that magnitude could easily push us over the edge into recession. i don't think it's something that's going to create the same kind of catastrophic decline in stock prices we saw in '08 and '09 because we are in so much better shape to deal with it. >> some economists think job growth could improve later in the year in car factories, for

example. car sales roared in may. chrysler alone up 30% as consumers caught up on purchases they delayed during the recession. >> we are seeing some pockets of the country where demand is definitely picking up in the housing mark. we saw gains in consumer spending in april. there is enough income growth for consumers to continue spending, and then businesses are very profitable. they are continuing to invest. >> now some economy efforts are looking to the federal reserve for some additional juice for the economy. they say today's jobs report gives the fed more reason to launch additional stimulus, falling oil and gas prices could help too. >> all this with the panel. peter, thank you. oil took another plunge today. crude futures fell 3 1/2 dollars to close $84 a barrel. that's on top of a 17% decline in may. gasoline dropped another penny. the national average is $3.61 a gallon, down six cents from a week ago. america is losing millionaires.

the boston consultant group said the country has 129,000 fewer millionaire households than at the start of 2011. about 5.12 million people live in such households in america. the rest of the world add the 175,000 households to the millionaire club. private wealth in north america dropped almost a percentage point to $38 trillion. wisconsin voters are being treated to big name politics in the final days before tuesday's recall election for republican governor scott walker. former president bill clinton was in milwaukee today stumping for mayor barrett who is trying to take walker's job. we look where the race is right now. >> you want to pit people against each other. >> much like the campaign the final debate touched only briefly on the original fight over state employee unions and collective bargaining rights. the highlights were the political bashes from entrenched battle lines. >> it's about the tea party movement and what he can do to

make this the tea party capital of this country. >> so everybody is clear here, the mayor doesn't have a plan and all he's got is attacking me. >> with minds made up, victory hinges on which side can motivate their race to the policy. republicans have brought in national figures like governor chris christie of new jersey, bobby jindal of louisiana and nikki haley of south carolina to energize supporters. >> you have to show up and vote for tom barrett on tuesday. >> democrats called on a familiar face. >> ordinarily i'm against a recall election. i went to try to fight one in california. but sometimes it is the only way to avoid a disastrous course. >> the retail politicking is so aggressive, mayor barrett personally marched supporters in the direction of the polls for early voting. third party groups claimed nonpartisanship but aggressively strattized. an sentence of one union has been providing free rides for

early voting. their routes concentrate in pure areas of milwaukee where voters lean democratic. >> some people don't have transportation. some people even don't know where the polling plays are. >> i want you to know mayor barrett has raised tax necessary milwaukee every year except one when he was mayor. >> they equip people with phones and dialing software on a bus that's been traveling the state. >> we are going to go to 1745. >> teams in the neighborhood carry tablets that direct volunteers to households. >> our focus is making sure that we touch every household between now and tuesday that we believe needs to hear the message of governor walker. >> more than 180,000 people here participated in early or absentee voting. the turnout on tuesday is expected to exceed 60%. governor walker enjoys a slight lead in the polls but it's too close to call. one thing certain, after all the

facing investigations, but so far no conclusions have been reached. >> and romney today filed his 2012 personal financial clear. they said they have a net worth between 190 and $200 million, and though it wasn't required, they say in the interest of full disclosure the romney as also disclosed a trust for their kids with an additional $100 million in it. brett. >> former florida governor jed bush says he will not be romney's running mate. he appeared to talk taxes today. he said he would support a tax increase if it were offset by 10 to 1 spending cuts and he was asked about his brother's actions during the financial crisis. >> did you support the rescue of wall street bank? >> i would argue enforcement was where the problem was, not the fact we had a deregulated financial industry. so for a short term solution to a problem that had global implications, i think that was probably the right thing to do.

>> in international news, thousands of egyptians took to the streets today to demand that former prime minister be disqualified for this month's presidential run off. he faces one of the muslim brotherhood. many egyptians, according to the polls, say they dislike both candidates. international condemnation of syria is pouring in and today sparked more squabbling between the u.s. and russia over what to do about it. mr. powell has the latest on the conflict. >> government forces continue to pound the syrian city of homs today. the fourth straight day rockets rained down on the stronghold. and meanwhile they took to the streets across syria. they marched into a hail of bullets, refuse to go run as the forces shot at them. in the town outside homs, allegations of another massacre

surfaced today at gunmen executed 11 workers in a fertilizer factory. they say the killings were carried out by rebels. this, however, could not be confirmed. meanwhile secretary state hillary clinton criticized russia's support for the regime. >> we know there's been consistent arms trade even this last year with the violence coming from russia to syria. we also believe that the continuing supply of arms from russia has lengthened the assad regime. >> russian president vladimir putin denied the allegationings and said they are rush full and said they are ready to help find a a peaceful solution to the conflict. but the un human rights voted overwhelmingly to condemn the regime. recent condemnations and

robust recovery by now if the president's policies had work, if he had been able to get america back on track, we would be looking at what happened in europe as being a problem, but certainly not devastating. these numbers are devastating. >> this economy gained just 69,000 jobs in the month of may, picking up 8.2% the unemployment rate. they are worse if you look at everyone out of work. that's what some people call the real unemployment rate, and that's the underemployment. the looking for a job, working part-time when they want a full-time job. that's now up to 14.8%, as you look at these numbers. and then you take a look at unemployment under president obama since the beginning when he took office. and there's the chart, now 40 straight months of unemployment over 8%. what does this mean for this president, for this administration, for this economy? let's bring in our panel. steve haze, rick klein, and syndicated columnist charles

kreitammer. >> this really scrambles the election playbook for team obama. they were counting on potstive signs. they were counting on growth. even if we didn't have a full-on recovery with unemployment rate below 6%. they are counting on some green shoots and things to look at and say things are getting better. to see the stock market react as negatively as it did, this change the calculations if you are planning out this campaign. it will force them to be even more harshly negative again the opponent and make this a referendum on mitt romney as much as they can rather than on the obama economy. >> the markets didn't like it. the dow dropped 275. and down almost 9% since may 1st. a lot of that over concern about

europe and the president mentioned that today. >> and over the sluggish recovery. i think the biggest number of the month is the one that came out a week ago on growth. it was revised down to under two percent. that means in all of last year, 1.7%. the first quarter of this year, 1.9%. you compare it with the reagan recovery on the eve of his re-election, they were growing 6% at that time. when you have a recovery this bad, there's no way you can have unemployment dropping at a reasonable level. and i think -- and there's a second opinion. you mentioned the stock market. people always have a sense of their own well-being in part as a result of the market. not because everybody is a big investor because all of us have retirement accounts. when it gross, as it grew very strongly the first half of the year, get a sense, what the economies call a wealth effect. you can almost measure it. now that we've had this real down turn in the economy as 10%, i mean in the markets at 10%, the drop is going to have a negative effect.

i think you will see that hangover in terms of the perception of where the economy is headed. and the stock market, obviously with unemployment and the anemic growth. i think this really puts the president in trouble. rick is right, there's no way he can run on his record. he will have to run a completely negative campaign or distractions and running on equality and the buff the rule and other sort of trinkets. >> steve, as you look at these months ahead of where we really get into the general election post conventions, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of movement potential from june, july into august when really the cake will be baked by the time you get to august and september. >> well, beyond the numbers themselves, that's exactly why these numbers, this report has to be so concerning to the white house. you look back, we've gone from the point where we were sort of stalled and things weren't going well, we are now heading in reverse. we still added 69,000 jobs but in terms of where we are going

we are headed in reverse. the previous two jobs numbers were also revised down. so this is not the direction the obama team wants, obviously. and i think it's panic time in chicago. there was a tweet that was sent out by nome shriver, who is an editor at the new york republic, a liberal guy, wrote a book about the stimulus. and he said what charles just said, obama can run on his record. it's all about discredittitying mitt romney. but think about what that means. if he can run on his record, it's because it's a a record of failure. that's a huge problem for the obama white house. they have to spend five months explaining away even what liberals are suggesting is a record of failure. >> one thing they are doing is saying congress didn't do enough. there was a retort on capitol hill today. on both sides. take a listen. >> thirty bills sitting in the united states senate? >> then why don't they pick up

the pills and pass them and help the american people instead of playing politics over there. >> progress is too slow. in part progress is too slow because of the grade lock and lack of agenda that is being pursued by our republican colleagues. >> these job numbers of pathetic. the american people really deserve better. >> although this is the 27th month of increased and continued job increases in our economy, it is certainly not enough. >> so who is not doing enough? it was this back and forth. it was almost like a tennis match-up. >> and screaming boehner, he's fun when he gets into it like that. the president problem in running against congress is congress is running against themselves at the same time. he's not been able to separate himself from that washington noise. a lot of people sitting at home and watching these numbers roll in, you feel like he's part of the problem and not part of the solution. there may be a month of tune a

month ago to separate himself from that and effect toughly run against the gridlock in washington t gets harder to do as time goes on. it's harder to look back or to cast blame around when you have been in office longer. they will make reminders what things have been like in the past but he's been president for 3 1/2 years. >> i want to play one more sound bite. former president bill clinton asked on nn last night about attacks on mitt romney and his time at bain capital and his explanation today. >> i don't think we ought to get into the position where we say this is bad work. this is good work, a man who was a governor and then his business career, but he shouldn't be elected because he's wrong on the economy and wrong on all these other issues. so today, because i didn't attack him personally and bash him, i wake up it read all these

stories, taking it out of context, as if i had virtually endorsed him. >> what about that? the surrogate back and forth. >> clinton doesn't do a good hostage tape. it's obvious i didn't have his heart in that. the reason he was being use the by the romney campaign is not because he didn't attack romney, it's because he said he had a sterling business career after the obama campaign had poured millions of dollars into saying this guy is a july and vampire. when get the number one democrat in the country saying sberling and you get some saying he had a perfectly good business and according to booker, the mayor of newark, new jersey, who had to take a hostage tape. he said he was nauseated by the attacks on romney and payne. it tells you it is not going to wash or a lot of democrats won't

construct this language. the white house was not going to let special interests influence any of this, but yet you've got an organization that is out here basically writing the healthcare bill. >> republicans are point to go e-mails released that came out this week that said that the administration was doing as was suspected, some dealing with the pharmaceutical companies before the healthcare bill was put together. what about all of this and how it factors in in the big picture, steve? it doesn't seem like healthcare overall, the law, has been very popular according to the polls, depending on how you ask the question. >> it hasn't been. e-mails, with the potential with more coverage could be quite damaging. but people moved beyond the construction of the healthcare bill and everyone is waiting for the supreme court decision and a potential debate about where it goes if the court upholds the mandate. >> the e-mails do overshadow the

whole transparency talk from the administration in what was happening in the construction of that bill? >> i this you it does. the bill was so unpopular because those negotiations weren't televised on television. the supreme court will have a say and potentially upend all of this. some democrats aren't scared of the prospect of this being thrown out. the idea of removing this albatross from them going into the fall and giving them something to motivate their voters out there, the policy is it's settled. even though it will change the equation to have the signature legislation of obama's first term being thrown out. >> well, i've entertained it because it's so interesting and perverse but i this i in the end it will be a straight shot.

if it's overturned it will be a huge setback for the president. his signature achievement. he spent a year and a half on it instead of working on the economy. and the idea a professor of constitutional law got it so wrong, he and his democratic leadership, that they western even aware of the constitutional issues. and the most important thing he did in the congress, i think psychologically it will be devastated >> but it may be a bit of a relief not to have to defend the health bill. >> in the races, yes. but for the president who is so closely linked with this, it's a net loss and a big loss. >> the next topic is this cyber warfare that a big article again in the new york times talking about how president obama secretly ordered the increase of sophisticated attacks on computer systems in iran, including the stuxnet virus we've heard a lot about. there's been some angst about

this in the last few days. intel officials are not happy with this. >> no, and it started with intel people, national security people were concerned about the leaks and the fact it was laid out on the pages of the new york times and that increased as date went on. i talked to some senior former intelligence officials and he said david petraeus needs to do a crime report none and start an investigation into the leak. the bugger problem is one person said it appears to professionals that the information that they have been sworn to protect is being used for political information by the white house. that's a problem in the intelligence community. >> you made something earlier in the show about leon panetta said about cyber warfare and the idea that would be warfare. the implication is we may be at war with iran over what went on. it's stunning, a stunning revelation. we are learning more about the president and how aggressive he's been in some of the national security areas. and i think this is just -- it's a really fascinating development
